A traffic collision involving two vehicles occurred today on the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 near the Airport in Salinas, CA. The incident took place around 5:28 PM and involved a small dark-colored Honda and a semi-truck with a refrigerated trailer. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the collision.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the Honda collided with the semi-truck, causing it to veer off the roadway, crash through a fence, and end up in a ditch approximately 20 feet from the road. Emergency services were dispatched promptly, and multiple units from the CHP responded to manage the situation.
Initially classified as a collision with injuries, the incident was later reclassified to a collision without injuries after emergency responders assessed the scene. No individuals required medical transport, and the situation was contained without further complications. However, a ruptured fuel tank on the semi-truck was reported, which was leaking fuel. Fortunately, the leak was deemed non-hazardous, posing no significant threat to the environment.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene to clear the roadway. The Honda, which ended up in the ditch, required towing due to its position, while the semi-truck was towed from the shoulder of the highway due to the fuel leak. Traffic on the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 remained open throughout the incident, minimizing disruption for motorists.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent accidents. This incident highlights the importance of road safety and the potential hazards that can arise from vehicle collisions.
